Chef Kenneth Hughes and his staff strive to make every brunch, lunch, dinner—and even the small plates—a memorable experience. And they do so in an ambience that is elegant, yet unpretentious: a fieldstone manor house with stained glass windows, a soaring fireplace, a richly appointed bar, and a terrace overlooking a quiet rural countryside.
Our philosophy is about connections, not only connecting people to one another through food, but also about connecting Poplar Springs to its location in beautiful Northern Virginia. Because of that, the provenance of our food is important. Much of it is locally sourced and seasonal, including from our own gardens. The result is a refined, flavor-rich menu with a European flair, complemented by a happy, eclectic wine list.
A native Washingtonian, Chef Hughes returns to lead the Poplar Springs Inn and Manor House Restaurant culinary team. Hughes served as Chef de Cuisine at the Manor House Restaurant for the former owner from 2006-2008. Most recently, Hughes was Executive Chef at Open Kitchen, Falls Church, VA, a certified green neighborhood bistro featuring farm-to-table cuisine. A graduate of the California Culinary Academy (now Le Cordon Bleu) and member of the French International Culinary Society of Washington, DC, Hughes worked in the l'Auberge de Soliel, Napa Valley, CA; the Lodge at Breckenridge, CO; and Chef Albert Tordjman's legendary Flying Saucer Restaurant, San Francisco. He is classically trained in "Old World table" with an emphasis on fresh food from raw and artisanal local sources, American - California style, and both New and Old World wine pairings. The Manor House Restaurant is open Wednesday and Thursday, from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday, from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for brunch.
